Special Situations Real Money Portfolio May 2014 Update

It’s been quite some time since I’ve updated you on the Special Situations Real Money Portfolio.  The Special Situations Real Money Portfolio is actually my son’s Coverdell Education Savings Account that I set up on October 19, 2004 as an experiment. I wanted to see if an individual investor could earn stable returns from special situations and arbitrage opportunities similar to the opportunities Benjamin Graham called “stock workouts.” Overall, this portfolio has been a huge success.

The Special Situations Real Money Portfolio ended the month of April with a total value of $58,479.76. Of that amount, $35,549.29 is currently in cash. Year-to-date the Special Situations Port is down 1.75% as of the market close on April 30, 2014. Since the inception of this portfolio, my total return is now 265.5%. The overall compound annual growth rate for the Special Situations Real Money Portfolio since inception is 19.96%.

The portfolio currently holds positions in Blackhawk Network Holdings B (HAWKB), Safeway (SWY), ERA Group (ERA), and a legacy holding in Presidential Realty Corp (PDNLB).
